The President had asked for a golf course with a hotel attached for the ease of staying the night.
Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort was chosen and after a few dropouts 28 Mals and 8 new boys attended the golf day, a fantastic turnout which shows the popularity of our President, Air Vice Marshall Hick.
We were all aware that it had been the wettest start to the year in history and subsequently the Telford course was very, very wet.
They were selling Wellington Boots with studs in the pro shop!
The day started well with bacon baps, coffee and/or alcohol being the pre golf ritual for many.
Roy Bound had agreed to run a nearest the pin chipping competition on the 18th hole with all the profits going to the Mals Future Fund to support our young newcomers. He had a very long and tiring day but what a huge success in raising £255 after paying out the £100 prize to a very lucky Adrian Cowell.
We all thank Roy for all his hard work on the day.
The golfers came in, some wet and dejected, others not so much and soon the tribulations of a very wet and uninspiring round were forgotten with the taking onboard of a few after-golf bevvies.
Dinner came, unfortunately not much better than the course, but Hey Ho spirits were lifted in due ratio to drinks consumed.
It was good to see some returning new boys from last year’s trip and some new boys for their first acquaintance with the Mals.
Speeches were finished and the President was presented with a golf visor to help his follically challenged appearance.
And so to the prizes.
In a very consistent streak, Lee Cope retained his ‘I know it didn’t look like it but
I really did try’ award.
Nearest the Pins were new boy Josh Nunneley and very old boy Calfey. Longest drive was Keith (Edwards) Williams (there were longer, but none stayed on the fairway). Best Gross was won by new boy Stuart Viggers. Best New Boy was won by Tyson Nunneley.
3rd and 4th Places were shared by Dave Dallaway and Simmo with 33 points.
Edwards came in 2nd with a creditable 35 points but was overshadowed by a sterling performance by a rejuvenated Golf Captain, Smithy, with a superb 38 points taking the Robinson Receptacle and an array of golf prizes. His winning speech lasted just short of one hour, interlaced with some very old jokes by himself and other Mals.
The evening carried on with stylish conversations and copious amounts
of alcohol for those staying at the hotel and only ended when the bar shut at 1.30p.m.
And so to bed and another Mal de Mer Golf Day came to an end.
